A Reflection on Boston

We are reflecting today on all of those who were affected by the bombing in Boston. We hope those involved are receiving support from friends, family members and even strangers as they struggle to understand what's happened and how their lives will be affected. Not only people were impacted; property and businesses were too. Whether it was a business owner who couldn't operate his or her business, or an employee who couldn't come to work the next day, the affects will linger on. A sad fact is that business insurance have an exclusion for terrorism, and owners don't see a need to add the coverage onto their policies. If this raises questions for you and your business, feel free to call us at 503-288-8818. We are here to help.

One of the most common of all accidents involves backing up, especially in a parking lot. Most often, both drivers will be found to be at fault. Keep in mind that without an impartial witness (one not riding in your vehicle), it can be difficult to prove who backed out first. The solution is to look for parking spaces where you can drive through to the parking space directly ahead. In other words, look for the spot where you can go forward to leave the space, rather than have to back up to exit.

Water

Water is an essential part of our daily life. However, it can also cause problems for our home and property. Here are some tips for identifying water issues in and around your home:

1. If you are having work done on or near your water lines, check your water meter after the workers leave your property. Shut off all taps, etc. before you check. If the large red dial is moving you may have a big leak; if it is the small red dial, you may have a small leak.

2. Make sure there are no blockages in your storm drain.

3. Check your street storm drains to see if they are free of debris. If this is clogged the water may find its way onto your property instead.

4. It's time to clean your gutters if water is running off of the sides of your gutters when it is raining.

5. Water stains on your ceiling or walls likely indicate a water leak at some point (either current or in the past).

6. Feel the ground in your yard to make sure there isn't a sprinkler leak. If it is saturated, there may be a leak or the area could be over-watered.

7. If there is a dry spot which should be getting water from your sprinkler system, find out where that water is going instead.

Generally speaking, damage from a sudden water leak in your home will be covered by home insurance (the resulting damage, that is, and not the leaky item itself). Damage from gradual water leaks are generally excluded. Surface water damage will need a separate flood insurance policy for coverage to apply. Please contact your Timmco/Peninsula agent for more information.

One of the most common claims we see is theft of personal property from vehicles. This is very unfortunate as it typically involves claims on two policies...one on your auto insurance for damage to your vehicle and the other on your home or renters insurance for the personal property that was stolen. Two deductibles would apply which could total $1,000 or more!

Here are some tips:

1. Do not leave ANYTHING visible inside of your vehicle while you are away. Thieves don't know that bag is full of recycling until they break the window and look inside the bag.

2. If you must leave something inside your vehicle (laptop, handbag, ipod, etc.), transfer it to your trunk before departing for your destination. You don't want someone to see you putting it in your trunk after you've arrived.

3. Make sure to lock your doors at all times. Many crimes are those of opportunity...thieves will go to the next car with the unlocked door instead of taking the time to break into yours.

Please contact us to review your current auto, home, or renters insurance policies. We are here to help!

Many of you may remember back to a day when cars only had lap belts and the reaction of a mother throwing her arm in front of her child's chest during a hard brake was the precursor to the modern day air bag. Fortunately for today's families safety equipment in cars has vastly improved. Car seats and booster seats are required by law but children are still injured or killed in car crashes everyday. Many of these injuries could be avoided if parents and drivers would take the time to properly secure children in their car seats.
A survey from the National Safety Belt Coalition revealed that between 80 and 90% of child safety seats are installed or used incorrectly. Parents and caretakers need not be confused about how to propely secure their precious cargo, simply follow the NHTSA's 4 guidelines.

1. Rear Facing Seats in the back seat from birth to 1 year old and at least 20 lbs.

2. Forward-Facing Toddler Seats from age 1 and 20 lbs to about age 4 and 40 lbs.

3. Booster Seats in the back seats from about age 4 to at least age 8, unless 4'9" tall.

4. Safety Belts at age 8 and older or taller than 4'9". All children age 12 and under should ride in the back seat and not in a seat with a front air bag.

Many local fire departments are ready and qualified to inspect your child safety seat to be sure it is properly installed and being used correctly. Call your Timmco agent and we'd be happy to locate a fire station near you for this valuable service.

Most of us read about declining home values in the challenged economy and see homes "for sale" in our own neighborhoods for far longer than was the case not long ago. Prices are down. Demand has been reduced. But, should we be considering a reduction in the insured value of what very well might be our largest investment?

Actually, while market values may fluctuate with the economy, the replacement costs do not necessarily follow suit. The cost to build a home today can be significantly more than the cost to build the same house when it was new. Both materials and labor fluctuate due to availability. Some of the additional building costs not found with new construction that might affect the cost of rebuilding after a large loss include:

* Temporary repairs
* Demolition
* Increased engineering & architectural fees
* Code compliance
* No economies of scale

These costs could add up to 30% to the replacement of your home. If you are making changes to your home, you'll want to notify your Timmco insurance agent to make sure that your homeowners insurance limits are adequate to reflect the true replacement value of your house today. And, if you think that your homeowners insurance coverage should be reduced because market or tax assessed values seem to be down, remember that rebuilding a home generally costs more than building a new house. As always, we're here to help you with advice.

Today's sunshine helps us forget that just a few weeks ago, Oregonians in most corners of the state were growing weary of our snowy and icy winter weather! Many of our customers experienced for the first time in their homeownership an accumulation of ice buildup and roof damage. An ice dam is an accumulation of ice at the lower edge of a sloped roof, usually at the gutter. When interior heat melts the snow on the roof, the water runs down and refreezes at the roof's edge, where temperatures are much cooler. Eventually, the ice builds up and blocks water from draining off of the roof. This forces water under the roof covering and into the attic or down the walls of the house. Once an ice dam forms, potential damage can be serious. Take preventative steps now:

* Ensure that gutters are clear of leaves and debris.
* Keep the attic well ventilated. The cooler the attic, the less melting & refreezing on the roof.
* Keep the attic floor well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising through the attic from within the house.

These steps coupled with tips from your local building official about minimum code requirements, may help you avoid the ice dam invasion we experienced in our own Broadway office location!! On this Groundhog Day 2009, Punxsutawney Phil proclaimed by action that we're in for another 6 weeks of winter. Watch out for the ice dams!!

Road Risks Rise In Current Economy

More drivers are letting their car insurance lapse because of the sour economy. The Wall Street Journal reports that several hundred thousand drivers in this country dropped their auto insurance in the past year as the jobless rate climbed.

This means that each of us assumes more risk when driving. We are faced with the possibility that an at-fault driver will be unable to pay for the repairs to our vehicle or assume financial responsibility for our injuries. We'll have to depend on our own coverage - subject to the Collision deductible we selected. Our insurance company will do its best to collect their repair costs and our deductible back from a liable driver, but they frequently have no assets. Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage is a partial solution for both those who carry Collision coverage and those who choose "liability only" due to the age and value of their car. Similarly, innocent injured drivers and passengers may turn to Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage more frequently these days. Be sure your limits reflect your needs as the number of uninsured drivers continues to rise.
